May Movies 2019

Movies seen in theater only. Total: 5

I did not take into account how busy I get during the summer. Still love going to movies though. Priorities I guess. Anyway, here is my mini reviews of movies I saw in May

1) Uglydolls (5/3/2019)

So I went to see this movie for a couple of reasons. One, I am a sucker for musicals and two my roommate's girlfriend also wanted to see it and I cannot say no to a movie buddy. Much like the movie Trolls the songs were good, the message was nice and the jokes were fun. If you have kids anywhere from 3-10, I imagine they will enjoy this movie. As a 30 year old woman with no kids, I am sure I was not the target audience, but I still enjoyed myself, but admit I will likely never watch this movie again. 5 out of 10.

2) Pokemon Detective Pikachu (5/12/2019)

I am the perfect age to have all the happy memories of watching Pokemon when I got home from school each day, playing the card game when it first came out, and owning a Gameboy color so I could try to catch them all. All that being said, this movie is really nothing like the old show or the games. Honestly that makes it much better really. I liked all the characters and of course Ryan Reynolds was his great, albeit PG, self. I would actually love to see a PG13 or higher version of him cracking jokes as Pikachu, but as it was the movie was very cute and hit all of the nostalgia nails right on the head. I would watch this one again and make a game of spot the pokemon, just for fun. I will add that the bad guys storyline is a bit lame. I do not understand his motivation at all, it doesn't really take away from the movie, but it sure doesn't add anything. Overall I would give this one a 7 out of 10.

3) John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (5/17/2019)

So I was a bit late to the John Wick party. That is, I had not seen the first or second chapter until I heard chapter three was going to be a thing. Also, all of my friends seemed to like it and I am not above jumping on a bandwagon even if I am a little late. So I had to watch 1 and 2 before seeing 3 and I will say that I liked them. I am even okay with the whole premise of just avenging a dog. I feel it is much more complicated than that. Also once someone told me Ruby Rose was in one I was a little more sold. Right, so the 3rd movie. I felt like this one had more world building than the first two. I like world building personally and appreciated getting a look into this weird world where there are just tons and tons of assassins and nobody sees anything or questions it. The adjudicator was a lot of fun, as was Halle Berry's characters. I am not sure about the ending, this was a middle movie for sure. I will of course go see more of these movies and I hope the world really gets fleshed out. I recommend seeing this movie is theater while there is still a little bit of time. Action is always better in theater. This movie/franchise gets an 8 out of 10 from me.

4) Aladdin (5/26/2019)

I'll admit I was a little skeptical of this movie and was going to wait to see it, but funny enough my mom really wanted to see it and I simply cannot say no to my mom. I'll start off by saying that the original cartoon Aladdin was not my favorite. I liked parts of it a lot, Robin Williams as the Genie, the idea of a flying carpet, and having a pet tiger were all super awesome to little me. This new rendition was actually a lot better for me in many ways. I loved that they improved Jasmine's story and gave her more motivation and reason. I will also give Will Smith a lot of credit for keeping the character of the genie really fun and funny and still being totally himself. This was a good remake and well casted. Overall I give it a 7 out of 10.

5) Godzilla (5/30/2019)

I am not a Godzilla expert, I do however live with a Godzilla expert. That is, he built a 3 foot movable puppet of Godzilla that lives in my house. So naturally I saw this on opening night. I really liked it, the people story was okay and the monsters were badass. I did not go in needing or expecting more than I got. My roommate did inform me that is played many hommages to the originals and that the monsters where spot on. I will default to his expert opinion. For me, I was entertained and was totally team Mothra. I am looking forward to Godzilla vs Kong. It could be civil war in my house, but I will hope for the best. 7 out of 10 for me.

I am a little disappointed in myself. I really love seeing these movies and writing about them. I also really like blogging at want to commit to doing it. So my goal for next month will be to have the June movies up much earlier. Hope all of you are keeping cool as we head into summer. I also wanted to add I am open to movie suggestions or format suggestions.

Thanks and all my love,
