June Movies 2019
Movies seen in theater only. Total: 5
1) Dark Phoenix (6/12/2019)
I'll start by saying the X-men Universe is not always my favorite wing of the Marvel cinematic universe. I'll also add that of course I have seen them all. This movie would rank much higher for me if it didn't feel like it was more about Xavier than it was about Jean Gray. I just found it frustrating. I think this story was better than the one for X3, but barely. I also think it felt more like a DC movie in a lot of ways. All dark and brooding without the humor of a typical Marvel movie. I feel I should also address the similarities between Captain Marvel and Dark Phoenix. I am sure that Disney buying out Fox and the need for changes caused a lot of problems for this movie. I am all for strong female movies. No buts, I want more and will keep supporting them. This movie was entertaining and while it seemed to lack focus at times I liked it and will likely watch it again. For me this movie is a 6 out of 10.
2) Men In Black International (6/14/2019)
This movie falls somewhere between a reboot and a sequel for me. I will start by saying that I love both Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson and would probably see any movie that they are in together or separate. That aside, the story was a little predictable and it did not really broach any new ground. I was very entertained though, the movie was funny and full of aliens and action. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who liked the original MIB. I will re-watch this move for sure. I'll give it a 8 out 10.
3) Child's Play (6/21/2019)
I have a complicated relationship with scary movies. This one in particular is one that scared me when I was little. Probably shouldn't have watched it at 5. Anyway, this was 100% meant to be a remake of the original movie. This was not really a scary movie, it was really gory, but not full of jump scares or tension. I don't really remember if they made Chucky out to be likable in the original movie, but that seemed to be the goal of this movie. I cannot say I liked this one anymore than I liked the original. If creepy dolls meets saw is your jam then check this movie out. For me it is a 5 out 10.
4) Toy Story 4 (6/28/2019)
I was 8 when the first Toy Story came out. I loved that movie so much. I guess because it helped me to get over some of the fear that Child's play created when I was younger. Ironic since there is also a pretty scary scene where the toys show themselves to Sid. Anyway, I did not think any movie could top the first one, but in truth these movies only got better and better. You all know I cried at the 3rd one. I went into this movie wondering what story could be left to tell. Turns out it was a story I didn't know I needed until I saw it. This movie was amazing. I laughed, I cried again, I was so happy to see the characters I love continue to be amazing and all the new characters were great too. From the return of Bo Peep to the introduction of Forky, I loved it all. Please see this movie. The hype is real and you'll be happy and we should all just do things to be happy sometimes. 10 out of 10!
5) The Dead Don't Stay Dead (6/29/2019)
Last minute decided to fit this movie in. With an allstar cast and a love of zombies it seemed worth a shot. I will say two things right off the bat, this is not an action movie, nor is it a horror movie. This movie is slow and the humor is dry. I will say that I liked it, but it was not at all what I was expecting. It not like Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland. Honestly I am not sure what to compare it too. I guess it has the vibe of a Wes Anderson film. It is meta and confusing at times. I have a feeling that I just need to watch it again. I'll save that for October. I say if you like a good cast and zombies, you'll like it. 6 out of 10.
Much better this month. It is only the 3rd and I am posting this. I will call that progress. Looking forward to some more summer movies. Still open for suggestions or recommendations.
All my love,
