August Movies 2019
Movies seen in theater only. Total: 6
Much better movie month. I am so bad at writing these in a timely manner. *sigh*
1) Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (8/2/2019)
Before watching this movie I tried to watch all of the other Fast & Furious movies chronologically. I failed, but I did watch the first 5 (including Tokyo Drift in the time line order) Some are better than others and man Dwayne Johnson was a lot smaller. Anyway, I forgot that Shaw was a bad guy and still have no idea how he is now a good guy, but whatever. I liked this movie. It was full of action and funny quips. I really enjoyed the whole cast, particularly Vanessa Kirby and Helen Mirren. The special cameo by Ryan Reynolds was also really funny. Story wise...meh, it was fine and fit in with all the other F&F movies. Will I see it again? Probably. Would I recommend it to everyone? Probably not. If action and seeing The Rock somehow hold a helicopter down are your jam though, then for sure check this movie out. Solid 6 out of 10.
2) Toy Story 4 (8/7/2019)
Yep. I saw this in theater again because my sister asked me to and who am I to say no? For my full review see June Movies here. Still a 10 out of 10 the 2nd time.
3) Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (8/8/2019)
If you read these books as a child you will remember just how good and creepy they were. The artwork done by Stephen Gammell from the original book is really brought to life in this movie. I went in hopeful and was not at all disappointed. While I am not totally sure why the time period of the Vietnam War was chosen as the backdrop for the movie or what all the stuff about Nixon had to do with anything, it didn't take aways from the film in anyway. The creatures were indeed scary and I found myself more than a little stressed out if not actually scared at times. The ending was satisfying and the sequel bate was strong. I am hopeful there will be more as there are many more scary stories to tell. I give this movie a 9 out of 10 and look forward to watching it again.
4) Dora and the Lost City of Gold (8/11/2019)
So I am a little too old to have actually watched Dora the Explorer when it was on TV, but I was familiar enough with it that I was a little hesitant to see this movie. Nickelodeon has made a few live action movies from their cartoons to varying levels of success. That being said, I really enjoyed this movie. It was funny and took all the parts from the cartoon that where a little silly and over the top and made them entertaining for both adults and children. The actress that played Dora was perfect. It was like if Indiana Jones had been a peppy hispanic girl who liked to sing. I do not have kids, but I still very much enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to my friends both with and without children. 8 out of 10.
5) Lion King (8/17/2019)
I'll be honest I did not plan to see this movie at all, let alone in theater, but my mom wanted to and again I cannot say no to her or my sister. I basically could sum this movie going experience up in one word...meh. It wasn't bad or anything. It was the cartoon, but the animals looked real. I guess to its credit, it was pretty and I admire the amount of work that likely went into creating it. Past that I have nothing to add. I will probably not watch it again. I am struggling with what rating to give it. I guess I will go with a 5 out of 10 because the original Lion King was great and the story is still good. See it if you love Lion King or if you have never seen the animated Lion King .
6) Ready or Not (8/21/2019)
The surprise movie of the month. I weirdly loved this movie. I went in expecting little to nothing and left pleasantly surprised. I wont spoil the ending, will just say that it was good. This is not a mystery movie or really even a horror movie. I think that it is survival movie, but it is done well. The main character reacts in pretty real ways to pretty messed up stuff. It keeps you guessing just enough while laughing and cringing. I am curious if it will stand up to multiple watches and intend to find out. A tiny bit gory but not over the top in my opinion. A ton of cursing and some of the deaths are violent. Not for kids. I give it a 9 out 10 and would recommend it to anyone who likes a bad ass lady doing what she's gotta do.
Small announcement to anyone that is reading these. I am going to try really really hard to write more. I have no excuse for not and I will also get back on track for posting these reviews in a timely manner. One more thing. I am looking for movie suggestions for my October movie Challenge. (One scary movie a night for 31 nights. All scary and/or Halloween related movies welcome. As always thank you for reading.
