8 Reasons I Took Up Boxing
People like numbers right? 8 is sort of my go to number. So here are 8 reasons I started boxing. I started this endeavor about 4 months ago. I was hesitant. I had tried other exercise programs and classes and not really enjoyed them, but so far I have had nothing but a positive experience.
1) Didn't like yoga. (Or the regular gym)
I have read and been told that yoga is great for stress relief and can be a great form of exercise. That is probably all true. To be fair to yoga I think my problem with it was being able to relax in a group setting is just not for me. I could of course try it on my own, which is something I will likely do. It ended up feeling like I was spending a lot of money to feel uncomfortable.
2) Community.
You know what helps motivate me? Other people. It might sound a bit lazy but I am at least 80% more likely to do something if someone else goes with me or helps to hold me accountable. If I tell the trainer I will be there on Saturday for his class. Then I will be there. If my friend can go with me on Mondays then I am much more inclined to hit up that class. It is not a requirement of course, but is sure makes it more fun. Plus all the nice people I have met in the class. It is so nice to walk in and be greeted by the trainers and other members of the class.
3) Maybe I have a bit of pent up frustration.
I definitely have some pent up frustration. I did not realize how much until I started punching that bag. I am not an angry person, but there is something freeing about just letting all your emotions out on an inanimate object. I think I needed an outlet that involved punching things without actually having to hurt another person.
4) Losing weight.
Boring I know, but it is just because I want to feel healthier and I genuinely believe my healthiest weight is a little bit lower than my current weight. Actually since joining the gym and eating better I have managed to lose about 40 pounds over the course of a year. I am pretty happy about that as I have never really found a way to lose weight before.
5) Self-defense.
Life is scary. Really people are scary. I don't think I need to be stronger, but I do think I need to be more confident. Boxing has given me a lot of confidence both in myself and in my ability to protect myself. Of course I hope that I never have to use the skills I am gaining, but rest assured if push comes to shove...I will.
6) Healthy night time activity.
I like Netflix and chill as much as the next girl, but not every night. I have a fear of becoming one of those people who just gets up, goes to work, goes home and plops down in front of the TV. Adding these classes has been a great way to spend at least two evenings a week. I am pondering getting an unlimited membership and making it a 3 times a week gig.
7) Better sleep.
There is something to be said for a good nights sleep. Something I fail at on the regular. I have found that more exercise has helped both my insomnia and I have dreamed less. Of course this might not work for others, but it has been very helpful to me.
8) It's fun.
I think this one is pretty self-explanatory but honestly it is the most fun thing I have done for myself in a long time. Regardless of how my day went or what is weighing on my mind, that hour of pure hard work is a fun break that I see myself continuing for the foreseeable future.
Thanks for the read, probably be back later with more numbered lists.
