February Books 2019

Books Finished February 2019

I am continuing the numbering from last month. I have a goal of reading at least 40 books this year. So this and Goodreads are here to help me keep track.

6) Norse Mythology (Neil Gaiman)

Took me a weirdly long time to finish this book. I liked it, but I guess because it wasn't a story is was easy to jump between it and other things. After finishing it, I feel very educated in a mythology that I admit I knew little about. The Loki in these stories is a much bigger jerk than the one from the Marvel Universe. If you are at all interested in old myths then you should read this book. Also if you struggle a little with the words or the names you can give the audiobook a go. Gaiman reads it to you and it helps a lot.

7) Captain Marvel: In the Pursuit of Flight (By Kelly Sue Deconnick) Trade: Issues 1-6

I have been slowly working my way through all the Captain Marvel comics. In part for the movie coming out next month and in part because I love the character and want to read as much about her as I can. If you are looking for a good starting point to read this amazing ladies stories I would suggest starting here. You get enough backstory for things to make sense but it is not an origin story. Carol Danvers takes on the name Captain Marvel and a new journey begins.

8) The Bone Farm (By Dean Koontz)

This is technically more of a long prolog then an actual book. My mom recommend the Jane Hawk series to me and like any true Virgo I had to start from the very beginning. Without ruining it I will say that if you do not like serial killers or are triggered by kidnapping, rape, or violence. This might not be the series for you. This short intro for the main protagonist (Jane) made me fall in love with her. There are five more books in the series and I am curious what other trouble this FBI against will find herself in.

9) The Silent Corner (By Dean Koontz)

This is book one in the Jane Hawk series. After reading The Bone Farm I thought I had a pretty good idea of what this series would be about. I was 100% wrong. It starts with a crazy curveball and only gets more intense from there. I will say that if suicide is a difficult topic for you to read about this can get more than a little tough. Knowing this is a continuing series was still not a enough to convince me our heroine was going to get out of some of the scrapes she found herself in, but of course she does. This very much feels like a book one. A lot of setup and many unanswered questions. Not a cliffhanger per say, but I am looking forward to getting into the next book.

10) Captain Marvel: Down (By Kelly Sue DeConnick) Trade: Issues 7-12

Volume 2 in DeConnick's series is great. I love the humor and the little history shout outs. I am hoping to spend early March reading as many of the Captain Marvel books as I can. So far DeConnick's stories have been my favorite. I was a little worried that it would be hard to keep track of what was happening without a lot of back story, but it doesn't feel necessary. Although I will say reading the Life of Captain Marvel first might have colored how I look at the origin story. This feels like a middle story and I cannot wait to see where it is heading.

Hope you all like my mini monthly book reviews. I opted for not rating these on here like I do the movies, but I did give them ratings on Goodreads. Still building my, to-read list and always looking for suggestions.

Thanks as always,
