January Books of 2019

Much like the movies I am watching this year. I thought I would catalog and document all books I am reading too. I am going to be a little liberal though. Some of these are books I listened to, some I read in paper version, and some are comic books. I will only be counting comics in trade.

January 2019

1) Strong Ending: A Journey from Combat to Comedy (By Audible Originals.)

I think what this is, is a long podcast, but Goodreads let me count it as a book so that is good enough for me. This account of soldiers suffering from PTSD finding comfort in stand up comedy was a really interesting listen. I liked hearing directly from the soldiers and the comedy clips were funny, heartbreaking, and all too real. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone.

2) Alice Isn't Dead (By Joseph Fink)

This is one I listened to on Audible. Jasika Nicole, the reader was amazing. I was a little hesitant at first because I had listened to the podcast and was worried it was just a rehashing of things I already knew. It was much more than I could have asked for. It was scary and heartwarming. I loved the main character, Keisha, so much. Her dealing with her anxiety and how it made her stronger was really inspiring. It also gave me a new way to look at forgiveness that I hope I can live up to personally. I would recommend this to anyone who as ever felt like things were just a little bit out of their control.

3) The Life of Captain Marvel (By Margaret Stohl) Trade: Issues 1-5

I am so excited for the upcoming movie that I am hoping to read more Captain Marvel adventures. I like to think of this one as a cleaning up of her origin story. I don't want to spoil anything, but this was all about her family and how hard and complicated dealing with them can be, even if you are Earth's Mightiest Hero. Good place to start for anyone who wants to get into Captain Marvel.

4) Pet Sematary (By Stephen King)

Again I wanted to get through this book before the new movie comes out. I will admit I saw the 1989 movie before giving the book a go. It is not surprising to say I liked the book better, but they actually did a pretty good job in the movie. If you are a fan of Michael C. Hall, he does the audible version and he is great. He perfectly captures the fear and anger. Also I love his northeast accent. I now want to call all roads, ruds. Stephen King master of fear nailed it with this book.

5) The Crimson Spell (Charmed) (By F. Goldsborough)

What can I say, sometimes you just want something fun and easy to read. I love the Charmed T.V. show and I have quiet a few of the small novels that were written when it was still on. This one takes place some time in season two. It reads exactly like one of the episodes with the bonus of getting some of the sister's inner monolog. If you, like me, miss the original charmed, these books are great and are a very fast and easy read.

I set a goal of reading 40 books this year. I set that goal knowing more than half would be audio books, but it counts. I am still enjoying the book. Trust me, I love reading, but it is not always the easiest to find the time to sit down and enjoy a book. I will try though. I also wasn't sure about the comics in my goal count, but they are engaging and the stories are very good. I am keeping track on Goodreads as well. My wish list just keeps growing. What are you reading? Always happy to share.

Happy reading,
