February Movies 2019
Movies seen in theater only. Total 6
1) Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse (2/2/2019)
I actually saw this movie when it first came out in December. That is why it wasn't on my January movie list. However, a friend wanted to see and it is an outstanding movie worth seeing again. I enjoyed every part of this movie. The animation is amazing, the music is perfect, and the story was engaging and fun. I will be honest, Spiderman is not my go to guy. I like some of the Spiderman movies and I have read comics with him in it, but I am very far from an expert on the source material. I loved this movie because that didn't matter. It gives you all the context you need. This movie made me want to go pick up a Spiderman or Spider Gwen comic and learn more about these really fun characters. If you haven't seen it, do! 10 out of 10.
2) Drunken Master II - Special Showing (2/5/2019)
This special showing of a Jackie Chan classic was fun. I saw it in its original Mandarin with subtitles. The Alamo Drafthouse in my area is doing a series of Kung-fu movies with demonstrations. Although the story was dated and a little unrelatable, the comedy was funny and the drunken boxing was very entertaining to watch. I think there was meant to be a message about the dangers of drinking and the importance of family and cultural history...but some of that was lost on me. Overall I liked this movie and always enjoy watching Jackie Chan. 6 out of 10.
3) The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2/9/2019)
The review of this movie might come across as mixed. I liked it. I did not have an enjoyable movie going experience and that might color my feelings on how I remember the movie. That being said, this is a fun movie. The music is catchy and the jokes are fun for kids and adults. I think I will have to watch it again to appreciate it more, maybe there was too much going on? I am not sure. I would say that I imagine kids will love it and some kids at heart adults will too. 5 out of 10.
4) Isn't It Romantic (2/17/2019)
I'll start by saying I am not a romantic comedy fan. Part of the appeal of this movie is that is was making fun of romantic comedies. That and I think Rebel Wilson is really funny. The movie was funny and it did in fact make fun of romantic comedies and I did like the message. Will I see again? Probably not. Would I recommend it to my romantic comedy loving friends? Yes. 6 out of 10
5) Alita: Battle Angel (2/19/2019)
I went into this movie knowing two things. The first being my anime and manga loving roommate enjoyed this movie and the second being that James Cameron does not usually disappoint visually. Knowing those things I went to see it with said roommate in IMAX 3D. Visually it did not disappoint. Be warned this movie is very much the beginning of a much longer and more complicated story. One thing I appreciated about the movie is that the main character was not over sexualized. While the romantic story was weird for me, I do not think it was outside the norm of a manga and at no point did it feel too creepy. I hope they continue the story. If you like a lot of CG action and/or are familiar with the source material, you should give this movie a go. 7 out of 10.
6) How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2/25/2019)
Confession time, I had no intention of seeing this movie. I had not seen the second one and while I liked the first one I think just missed the train on this series. I was persuaded to see this one by a girl (Who can say no to a date with a cute girl right?) and even sat and watched the second one first so that I would be all caught up. It was totally worth watching both movies. I liked the story and the growth of the characters. The feelings of community and love in this series is great and the comedy is very entertaining. Again, the movie going experience might be coloring my judgement, but still worth a see in my opinion. 7 out of 10.
I'll say it again. The AMC movie pass is pretty great. Some of these showing would have cost 18$ just for the ticket and at 20$ a month I feel pretty good with seeing this many movies. They for sure don't sponsor me or anything. Just a really good deal. Let me know what movies you all are watching and what you thought about these ones. I am really looking forward to some March movies. Captain Marvel in one week!! Thanks for reading. Look forward to some book reviews soon.
